Commercial banks in Nepal are also called  'A' class banks. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has divided the financial institutions of Nepal into different classes such as 'A' class, 'B' class, 'C' class & 'D' class etc.

There are now 18 commercial banks in  Nepal regularly operating their services as of July 2023. Before 2022, there were 26 commercial banks in Nepal. 

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) inspired commercial banks to be merged with others in which condition is possible with the necessary regulatory provisions through monitory policies at different times.

Following the provisions of NRB, some of the commercial banks in Nepal greed to be merged with each other. As a result, 26 commercial banks before 2022 decreased and reached the number 18 now.
